Re: disable RAID material on proliant DL385 G5

I have no direct experience on this server.
I think you can choose to create two RAID 0 made up by one HD each.
or yuo can install the system using only one HD creating a RAID 0 using only one HD and add the other after the installation.

Re: disable RAID material on proliant DL385 G5

it seems that it was G5, i'll tell you omorrow.

i didin't know that i can choose RAID 0 with one HD, i shoud read the doc...

the fact that i can't choose to disable the RAID material, i choose RAID 0 installing with one HD but when i put yhe 2nd HD, the server didn't see it (no led, it seem that i didin't existe...)

it was strange!

Re: disable RAID material on proliant DL385 G5

you have to configure the other HD as another raid 0.

Re: disable RAID material on proliant DL385 G5

it seem to me that RAID 0 need minimum two HD or more.

what's the the advantage to use one HD to make RAID 0 ?

Re: disable RAID material on proliant DL385 G5

using a raid controller like that, it try to create - always - a raid.
RAID 0 using only one HD doesn't exist.
but it's named RAID 0 anyway.

if I've understood, you have already dreated the first RAID 0 using only one HD, right?

bye.

Re: disable RAID material on proliant DL385 G5

yes, i've used RAID0 with this config.

i really like to know where i could configure the RAID controller to disable the RAID material.

when i add a new HD, i can't see its device in my system(centos 4), but after activing it with the RAID 0, i can see its device.

(it's a hp Proliant DL385)

Re: disable RAID material on proliant DL385 G5

excuse me for the following question:
but if you are able to use an HD separated from the other, why do you need to disable the raid?

the single hd configured as RAID, allow, in the future, to migrate and expand the raid ...

bye.

Re: disable RAID material on proliant DL385 G5

"but if you are able to use an HD separated from the other, why do you need to disable the raid?"

At the beginning, i just wanted to disable the RAID material on the server.

For me, RAID (0,1 or 5) needs two or more HDs.
After testing RAID 0 with one HD, i was not sur that was correct what i've done because for me, RAID NEEDs two or more HDs...
And RAID 0 with one HD doesn"t really existe.
it is why, i wonder if i can disable the RAID material: it would be easier.

it'a also that i couldn't understand the notion of RAID 0 with one HD...:)

but with your explications, i understand better.

thank you for your patience!

Re: disable RAID material on proliant DL385 G5

hi,

now, my needs are defitively simple: disable RAID material.
i'm going to explain why.

i've got 2 servers:
- ALPHA: one hp Proliant DL that use the RAID material
- BETA: an another server doesn't do the RAID.

device:
- RAID material: /dev/cciss/*
- no RAID : /dev/sd*

when i take out a HD from BETA to use in the ALPHA, i can't use it: it doesn't work
i must to enable it to RAID, so if i do that, all my data will lost. and i don't want that.

i do need to have the possibility to switch the data of backup HDs between the both servers.

any advice would be very appreciated.

thank in adavance.

here's i use a Linux distribution.

Re: disable RAID material on proliant DL385 G5

Unlike Windows, Linux is pretty much hardware independant.
The reason moving between these servers doesn't work for you is probably because hte filesystem labels are different, as per the device names you mentioned.

I would suggest looking at your /etc/fstab.
If you can boot to a boot floppy or CD and fix the paths here for your alternate hardware you could well correct the issue.

I do not believe simply disabling RAID is the solution you are looking for. This server was built for RAID.

Re: disable RAID material on proliant DL385 G5

yes, i agree with you for the filesystem label.
the thing that is surprise for me is when i installed Centos, i discovered a new device name (/dev/cciss/c0d0*).
and for me, these devices are for the raid material.
i imaginated that if you do the raid material, you can't have "/dev/sd*"

actually, i don't have any device /dev/sd*

"I do not believe simply disabling RAID is the solution you are looking for. This server was built for RAID."

so this server works only with RAID material?
do you mean i can't disable the raid material?
strange! i'm going to ask the hp support.
my admin can't tell me about the server...

Re: disable RAID material on proliant DL385 G5

and when i add any HD, i must enable it firstly to RAID.
if not, the HD doesn't exist...
