dl380g1 trying to get 2k/2k03 installed

For the life of me i can't get 2k or 2k3 install in my dl380 g1. Using smartsmart 5.5 i was able to get the install started but when the install goes to grahpic mode is turn the server off and after a while turnes on again. It used to frezze at starting windows in graphic mode. I guess 5.5 helped with that. I tired smartstart 6.10 and 6.40 i can do everything except install a os. It says this verison doesn't support my server. yet the cd says G1 servers. I don't get it. Any help would be great.

Thanks

Re: dl380g1 trying to get 2k/2k03 installed

Hi William,

One to be sure of the smartstart cd is supported so worries
http://h18000.www1.hp.com/support/files/server/us/cd_supportinfo/ServerSupportMatrix.pdf

First clear the nvram of the server.

Second using the same can you run daignostics on server and check the iml log on the server. Which might give the hint why we are facing such a issue.

Hope for good.

Re: dl380g1 trying to get 2k/2k03 installed

Hi William,

the DL380 G1 does not have a ROM-based setup utility, which means SmartStart 6.0 and later are not supported for OS installation. Have you tried using the manual installation option from SmartStart 5.50? Select Windows 2000 as your OS, and go through the process until you are asked for your OS CD. Then boot from the Windows setup CD. Both 2000 and 2003 should have appropriate smart array controller drivers already on the CD, so you should not need any extra driver diskettes.
Then if you get the OS installed, you can install the latest support pack (7.40) by downloading it.
If you still get stuck, try running the floppy-based system erase utility:

http://h18023.www1.hp.com/support/files/server/us/download/17918.html

Use this to completely wipe your server and start from scratch again (SS 5.50)

Re: dl380g1 trying to get 2k/2k03 installed

William,
Give up on the "Smart"start and install the OS manually. We have the procedure in out support section, so not to use the CD. Just install the drivers you need at startup of the OS install. NOTE: you will have to undo everything the "Smart"start did, including the drive partition.

Re: dl380g1 trying to get 2k/2k03 installed

William,
Check these out :
http://h18004.www1.hp.com/products/servers/proliantdl380/index-1ghz.html

http://h18000.www1.hp.com/support/files/server/us/cd_supportinfo/ServerSupportMatrix.pdf

They contain general info concerning SS and OS support for your HW.

1.Make sure Bios and controller FW are up-to-date.
2.Use SS5.50 and choose manual configuration.
3.Configure/make System-Array-SystemPartition.
4. Exit SS and reboot with OS-cd.
5. Use F6 iot provide ctrllr-driver at start of Os-install.
6. Install PSP of your choice after OS-installation. Running from CD and choosing Espress-install will set most things right.
7. If need be you can always use W2k-drivers to get W2k3 running.
