equip ProLiant DL380 Gen9 Server with GPU

Dear friends,

We own a HPE ProLiant DL380 Gen9 Server. It has one single Xeon E5-2620 v4 processor with 4 times 16GB RDIMM (64GB in total).

There is one single riser with PCIe 3.0 x8 slots. The power supply supports 500W; the heatsink is standard I guess, since the processor’s usage is below 120W (from the specs).

I have two questions concerning a GPU and additional RAM. I would be grateful if you could give me some advice.

1. We would like to equip the server with a GPU. Unfortunately, I can not see what additional parts we need in order to enable the server to support a graphics card.

- Graphics Enablement kit (what is included here?)

- double wide PICe riser x16 (is it included in the Graphics Enablement kit?)

- power supply of at least 800W (according to specs); but the Graphics card uses 250W, the processor 85W, so we are far below the 500W supply, already built in?

-additional power cable kit gen9 (not included in the Graphics Enablement kit?)

-additional heatsink (for processors with standard heatsink and double wide PCIe cards?)

2. We would like to add some additional RAM

- is it possible to add at most 8 more 16GB RDIMMs (4 already built in)?

If you require further information, please let me know.

Thnx in advance

Re: equip ProLiant DL380 Gen9 Server with GPU

Hi,

I know part of these documents. Unfortunately, my questions only came up after I had read these documents. The problem is, that I can not figure out what's included in the graphics enablement kit.

"Doublewide PCIe cards are only supported with this Heatsink. For processors with a standard Heatsink that require double wide PCIe cards, the Graphics Enablement kit option is also required (719082-B21)." (Quickspecs, note on top of p. 5)

--> So, I need a heatsink and the Graphics Enablement kit and an additional riser card with double wide PCIe slots

"All slots support PCIe cards to 150W or more, but an additional Power Cable Kit is required.

Double wide PCIe cards are only supported in risers with the Processors leveraging the High Performance Heatsink. For Processors requiring double wide GPU support please order the GPU enablement kit" (Quickspecs, 2nd and 3rd note on p. 6)

--> power cable kit gen9 is needed, as well as a power heatsink, right?

"NOTE: This GPU enablement kit includes 2 Heatsinks and 8 cables to enable double wide GPUs Graphics to be supported." (Quickspecs, 1st note under 'HPE Computation and Graphics Accelerators', p.31)

--> 2 Heatsinks (for two processors?)

--> 8 cables (power cable kit? and double wide PCIe cables instead of primary riser???)

"For doublewide GPU support you are required to have at least 1x1400W Power Supply (720620-B21), per card for cards over 150W. Cards 150W or under can used 800W Power Supplies;" (Quickspecs, 2nd note under 'HPE Computation and Graphics Accelerators', p. 31).

This is the most difficult part to understand. 1x1400W Power Supply per card? For a card with 250W usage? If I put in two cards I need 2x1400W = 2800W power supply for 2x250W =500W??? I would say 1x800 is enough for a processor using 85W and a card of max. 250W. Even the 500W power supply could be enough.

Sorry, I just do not want to buy a lot of expensive HPE stuff, that is not needed in the end. That's why i want to be reassured a bit by someone having experience with these things.

Thnx
