firmware upgrade on DL 380 running ESXi 5

Hi,

We have ESXi 5.0 on DL 380 G6 and we have installed HP 10GE SFP cards. We need to update the firmware on the servers and I need some guidance on how to update the firmware for proliant running VMware.

Is it the same as installing firmware for servers running Windows ??

I have downloaded firmware 9.2 but that is for Windows 2008 R2. But there is nothing for Vmware.

Can someone please guide me. Thanks

Since you have Vmware running , for most of the components their are no online utilities, so you got to boot from the firmware dvd and install them offline

Download smart start 9.30B from here ( it is an ISO )

Many thanks for your reply. Ok will boot the server with the dvd and install the drivers and firmware.

Then how will the spf card show up in VSphere ?

Will they be under network adapters ?

Does the smart start CD have firmware update ??

This is a prod box and I could not see firmware updates on the server

Hi Goutham,

Mate you don't have to say sorry, you are guiding me and I thank you for your help.

I rebooted the server with the firmware CD and attached is the doc.

Some of the components failed and the NICS were not updated.

A kind reminder that I run ESXi 5.0 on the servers.

Interesting, Im not sure why the server PSOD Im guessing it could be because of unsucessful fw update, have you tried re-run the fw dvd again ?

Yes I did re-run the update once again but its the same. I am worried now if this might have done harm to the systems. They do startup but am not sure if I can run diag on systems running ESXi 5 ?

we could run offline diagnosis using the Smart start DVD

Choose all devices ( 6 loops ), this will take lot of time mostly around 6 -8 hrs, you may have to do a planned downtime to run the test.
