how to determine different generations of servers

I have been away from Compaq/HP products for some time. How can one best tell the generation of a specific server. I have looked on the visible tags but find no references.

Open the door or look at the front, you will always see something like G2, G3, G4 or G5. No reference means G1.

Thank you, I noticed it on some but not all. So I did not want to assume. New jobs can be challenging when your trying to catch up.
