iLO 3 not responding on DL380 G7

Hi,

The iLO 3 on our DL380 G7 (Windows Server 2008 R2) was setup and tested when the server was originally configured. In the first year or so, we have remotely connected to the iLO with the Web interface a few times and it was functional. I few months ago, we tried to connect to it again, but it was not possible to do so.

We have tried different ways to test if the iLO was responding and besides successful pinging of the IP, nothing seems to work. We have since tried upgrading the firmware, which failed, and setting the Security Override switch on the board to ‘ON’ so we could re-enable the iLO during boot and this is when we noticed the following message:

“Warning - iLO 3 not responding. System health monitoring has been disabled.”

There didn’t seem to be any ‘Press F8’ prompting, so we couldn’t get into the utility that would allow us to re-enable the iLO.

We then tried resetting the iLO in the Online Configuration Utility and that failed as well.

While we tried all these options, we received many error messages which we can provide, if this could help with the diagnostic. For now, we are wondering if the iLO functionality is not permanently lost and if this board will actually need physical repair.

What would be the next step for us? Is there any test we could perform? Any utility we could use to recover the iLO?

Thanks

If a power cycle does not help, consider the ILO chip as dead.

Hope this helps!

Re: iLO 3 not responding on DL380 G7

Is this for certain?

Does this mean that we would need to send the server to HP for repair, or could this be done on site to minimize the downtime? I really don't think we can afford to lose the server for weeks, or even days.

Thanks

Re: iLO 3 not responding on DL380 G7

Call HP and open a support case. They can send an engineer who will swap the board, depending on your contracts even at the same day onsite.

Hope this helps!

Re: iLO 3 not responding on DL380 G7

Thank you for the help Torsten.

What if we would wait for the repair to be done?  I am asking this because now is really a bad time for us to be tampering with the server. I suppose that replacing the board should not cause too long of a downtime, but what if the repair goes wrong of the new board has a different problem that is critical and the server needs to be looked at again?

Would it really be a bad idea to wait a few weeks (months) before going ahead with the repair? What does a non functional iLO implies?

Thanks for any comments or suggestions.

Re: iLO 3 not responding on DL380 G7

Did you remove power cables from the power supplies for 5 to 10 seconds and iLO still not coming back after you plugged them back?

Re: iLO 3 not responding on DL380 G7

It is not easy for us to shutdown the server since it is critical for our unit. Are you proposing unplugging the server as a guess this might work, or is it documented that this could bring back the iLO to life?

Thanks

Re: iLO 3 not responding on DL380 G7

sylco,

How did you resolve this problem? Was it the ILO chip? Did you replace the board? (I have a DL380G7 behaving in just this way. Flipping the DIP and unplugging/replugging has not resolved the issue.)
