I don't think Clear NVRAM really needed when CD boots normally and only freeze at one drive, if it successfully update for all others, and only freeze with first one, yes sometimes jump from one revision would be impossibly to the latest, and additional release between latest and older would be step, however it more related to older Hard drives.

Use offline Update Utility or recreate CD
