install new OS on DL580 G2 server

Hi I have a DL 580G2 server. It had windows NT 4.0 on it. I've wiped out the OS and want to install Windows 2k3 server. I have the smartstart CD v 7.10. When I put the CD in and go past the agreement screen and click on the "LAUNCH SETUP" I get a messages saying " smartstart does not support deployment of this server. Please refer to the matrix..".
I checked the matrix and it has a tick against Win2k3 for the DL580 G2 server. When I exit out of the smartstart, the cd is spit out there is just a blank screen. I've even put the OS cd and tried to boot but nothing happens.
I've pressed F8 and have configured the ARRAY for the HDD, but how can I proceed to install the OS. Any help is much appreciated.

Re: install new OS on DL580 G2 server

SS 7.1 should work fine on this server. What kind of an array controller are you using? Are you using the 5i?
The truth is out there, but I forgot the URL..

Terry,
I have the smart array 5300 controller. I've tried with ss v.7.0 & even 7.1 but when I click on LAUNCH SETUP, I get the error message.

Re: install new OS on DL580 G2 server

You can try a later, or earlier version of SS?

Do you have anything other than 7.1?

If not, you can download here...

Boot directly from 2003 use F6, specify driver from extracted diskette

Select 5300 and Continue Install
After all done download and install PSP

Re: install new OS on DL580 G2 server

I've tried to boot from the Windoes 2003 server cd but nothing happens. I have to bring to your notice that I made a mistake it is a G1 server and not G2. So, I've downloaded SS 5.5 and booted with ss 5.5. I got to the part to press F10 for system partitions.
I can choose OS as win NT and when I choose as "other" I am asked to put the first disk in drive a:.
Booting from the CD rom does not do any good. HP recomends that I boot from ss 5.5 and click on erase system and then reboot and then select manual installation and then choose windows 2000 advance server and then install 2003 server. What do you advise. Your help is appreciated.

Re: install new OS on DL580 G2 server

Given recommendation is correct

So, can you access F10?
Either change Settings at O/S selection, Verify boot controller Order, Standard Boot FDD/CDROM/HDD
If you can boot from SS CD â you should be able to boot from 2003 Cd also, W2K3 Copy or Original? Can you try one more disk?
And Continue with Win2003 CD, F6, Driver..

If you willing to start Over

Run erase Utility
Boot from SS CD 5.5 - Install SCU (F10 Stuff)
From F10 make sure SA5300 set as First bootable controller
From SCU (System configuration Utility) you can select 2000 AD Server and Install 2003 after.
At POST Access to F8 configure Array
And Continue with Win2003 CD, F6, driver..

Re: install new OS on DL580 G2 server

I tried to change or even check the boot order by pressing delete key, but I cannot go to the BIOS options.
The CD is a copy of the original but is licensed copy. I tried to use 2 different copies but none of them boot.
I will try your method tomorrow and if that does not work, then will have to erase and start all over again. Thank you once again and will be in touch.

Re: install new OS on DL580 G2 server

Instead DEL - with servers use F10 for older and Newer F9
In your case F10 when it ask at POST

Re: install new OS on DL580 G2 server

Hello again. I've changed the boot sequence from default to CDROM, a:, HDD and when I put the W2K3 server cd and reboot, it goes to an option to press F10 and then if I do not press F10 and let it boot, I get the following message:
Intel Boot Agent v 3.0.05
PXE-E61: Media test failure test cable
PXE-M0F:Exiting Intel PXE ROM
Error loading OS
and then the system hangs there. I've got to system partition options and deleted the system partitions.
Any ideas ????

Re: install new OS on DL580 G2 server

I've finally managed to get the OS on the server. I went online and found a way to create a bootable cd for W2k3 server. I created the CD and booted of that CD and was asked to put the installation CD in the drive. Having done that, the installation started and now I've got W2k3 server installed on the server. I think I am fine, not sure though.
And should I install the ProLiant Support Pack for Microsoft Windows Server 2003 & the mFirmware Maintenance CD ???? Please advise and thank you for all your assistance.

Re: install new OS on DL580 G2 server

Yes, it would be recommended to keep: all Firmware Up to date, you might miss some critical Updates. Use 7.40 and for Proliant Support Pack use either one 7.3 or 7.4
After O/S Completely loaded

Firmware Cd you need Unzip and Burn, make as bootable from ISO same as you did with O/S CD.

Re: install new OS on DL580 G2 server

Ok, I've burned the firmware image on the CD & I guess now I have to boot the server thru this CD. But do I need to make any configuration changes after booting from the CD or is it just click next ..next. could you please let me know.
Also, once the firmware 7.40 is done, I have to uncompress the psp and install it. Should it be easy or do I need to change anything. Please advise as I have never done this before, but I am earning and am enjoying. Thanks once again.

Re: install new OS on DL580 G2 server

For Firmware NEXT, NEXT as you stated, follow GUI, should be easy to run

For PSP Prior you run over Install

Install SNMP and configure
Verify Customer Advisory, how to do that
http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/Document.jsp?objectID=PSD_EM021108_CW01

With PSP Install, what ever it ask you; leave defaults unless you know what you do or Company requirement

Re: install new OS on DL580 G2 server

I have started updating the firmware. I started the ROM based update and one-by-one the amber lights started to flash on the HDD. but the HDD at the bottom keeps flashing and it is stuck there for more than 2 hours.
The screen shows an hour glass & 100% but the light is flashing. We had some issues with the hard-drive. Would this mean the HDD is bad ????

Re: install new OS on DL580 G2 server

2 hours it's more excessive time than needed, please restart server.
Chances HDD bad? If any problem found you would notice from POST, Red LED will be ON or it will flash.
You can restart and boot once again from CD, normally it should take less than 15-20 minutes.
Try to rescan and see what left

Now, the amber light keeps on flashing and the cancellation of updates is not happening. When I exit

the ROM update, the cd is spit out & the server restarts. The amber light does not flash and all the

drives look happy. So does this mean the server is not happy with ROM updates ???
I still haven't installed PSP for W2K3. Could you guide me. Thanks

Re: install new OS on DL580 G2 server

I would try to flash once again, if possibly go with one or two drives (device) at time, see if Process will hung at one of the drives, or try to re-flash once again all of them, possibly something buffered and process didn't go well.
If Process hangs on the Specific firmware Update release and same firmware working fine for second drive (same model) â possibly drive Problem
If Process hangs with firmware release for every all-identical drive model, you might need to recreate CD.

Drives firmware updates is recommended. However there is thousand Drives running across and updates missing on some of them, if Firmware Level of Smart Array controller will detect that Drive need Firmware Update you will see on the POST:
1766 - Slot x Drive Array requires System ROM Upgrade. Run the latest Run Systems ROMPaq Utility.
Or 1767 ...

Than it would be more critical to update

Re: install new OS on DL580 G2 server

I do not see any message during POST. All the drives are identical and the ROM update starts and hangs at the first drive.
I will recreate the CD and try again. I contacted HP & they advised me that the firmware may be conflicting with the prior version.
They suggest that I clear the NVRAM in the server. It will be difficult for me to unrack the server but I will try that too. What do you reckon.

Re: install new OS on DL580 G2 server

I don't think Clear NVRAM really needed when CD boots normally and only freeze at one drive, if it successfully update for all others, and only freeze with first one, yes sometimes jump from one revision would be impossibly to the latest, and additional release between latest and older would be step, however it more related to older Hard drives.
