Re: installing Vista on Proliant ML350 servers

You could us the freeware package nLite to integrate the array sata/sas drivers with your vista install. had to do this for the ml110 but for s2003r2.

Re: installing Vista on Proliant ML350 servers

Karlo, I started by trying to install the OS manually, but no luck. In ur earlier posting u sd to select Other OS. What were u talking about? Darren, what procedure did u use with nLite to install the controller drivers? I looked at the utility and the description for it says it's used to remove Win components, not install them. Tx.

Re: installing Vista on Proliant ML350 servers

hi

see the attached file to see the procedure
I mean how to work with nlite don't worry about "Other OS"

it's much better use nlite

just download this driver for your controller
Smart Array 641/642
http://h18000.www1.hp.com/support/files/server/us/download/27556.html

and follow the steps in the attached file

Re: installing Vista on Proliant ML350 servers

Hi, tried using nLite to create a new install CD but when it prompts me to select a controller driver it doesn't list the option Karlo recommends I select. Instead, it shows me these driver options, which r the drivers Karlo recommended I download:

- Smart Array 5300 Controller
- Smart Array 5i, 532, 5312 Controllers
- Smart Array 6i, 641, 642, 6400, 6400OEM Controllers

Karlo, did I download the wrong drivers. Also, when usng nLite even if I select all 3 drivers nLite doesn't prompt me to select an OS. Karlo, the Word doc u emailed to me instructs me to select an OS when prompted to, but the prompt didn't appear. Even so, I went ahead and produced an ISO file and am going to burn it onto a CD and try to use it to see what happens. If it doesn't work, I'll try Darren's recommendation, which is to use vLite instead. Darren, since u seem certain that using nLite isn't going to work, could u pls go ahead and let me know the correct procedure for using vLite. Tx, again, to both u and to Karlo for ur help and expertise with this. It's much appreciated.

Re: installing Vista on Proliant ML350 servers

Hi chip

I have not tried vlite, but I think it's much better

http://www.nliteos.com/faq.html#Q29

so if you have a 641 controller
(please check this in the BIOS, Boot Controller Order)

the link that I gave you is the correct one
http://h18000.www1.hp.com/support/files/server/us/download/27556.html

this is the list of smart arrays supported for that driver

Smart Array 5x and 6x Controller Support

Smart 5300
Smart 5i
Smart 532
Smart 5312
Smart 6i
Smart 641
Smart 642
Smart 6400
Smart 6400 U320

Re: installing Vista on Proliant ML350 servers

Karlo, the install CD I created with nLite didn't work. Tried it with Vista and with XP Pro. With Vista I got the blue screen of death, and with XPPro I got an error message telling me the install file couldn't find the file ultra.sys. The 2nd time I tried installing XPPro I got the blue screen of death. Re the controller, the info on the Boot Controller Order screen lists the following:
- Ctlr:1 PCI Embedded HP 64Bit/133MHz PCI-X Dual Channel U320 HBA Port 1
- Ctlr:2 PCI Embedded HP Integrated PCI IDE Controller
- Ctlr:3 PCI Embedded HP 64Bit/133MHz PCI-X Dual Channel U320 HBA port 2

There's nothing on the screen indicating its a 641 controller (or anything else). Maybe I should be looking at something else. By the way, my preference is to get XPPro installed on the puter if possible, since all our other puters have XPPro. Having a single OS is much easier for support reasons, of course. Tx, again, for the help. Much appreciated.

Re: installing Vista on Proliant ML350 servers

Hi chip

about XP I was thinking to tell you try first with XP but you already did it

so really to ask you about to check the order controller at this point but I thought you were giving me the controller I asked again because the errors you were getting

now about this controller you have
Embedded HP 64Bit/133MHz PCI-X Dual Channel U320 HBA

this is the driver OK
http://h18000.www1.hp.com/support/files/server/us/download/27273.html

also some information about that controller
http://h18004.www1.hp.com/products/servers/proliantstorage/adapters/133mhz-dual/index.html
like for example is an not array-RAID just let JBOD
so this is not important because that is not going to be a server just a client I think?
no fault tolerance is needed

well chip just let us know OK

Re: installing Vista on Proliant ML350 servers

hi

" Great idea, but am trying to turn this Proliant G4 ML350 server into standalone PC workstation to handle production of mostly marketing communications related stuff,"
