installing Vista on Proliant ML350 servers

Anyone know if Vista will install on Proliant ML350 servers, since its a 64bit OS? Does it come with the necessary controller, etc. drivers?

Re: installing Vista on Proliant ML350 servers

I think is not supported yet

what about W2008

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserver2008/audsel.mspx

http://h18004.www1.hp.com/products/servers/technology/whitepapers/os-techwp.html

because it's the latest version
I hope It has the most important drivers to avoid a lot of headaches installing with floppy and so on

Re: installing Vista on Proliant ML350 servers

Great idea, but am trying to turn this Proliant G4 ML350 server into standalone PC workstation to handle production of mostly marketing communications related stuff, so the W2/W3/W8 OS is probably not the best environment for that. Right now the server is just a rather expensive boat anchor, and I'm the guy that originally spec'd it. As u know, have tried unsuccessfully to install XP-Pro. If I could find the correct raid controller driver, I'm fairly certain I could get it to install. Better yet, if I could get Vista to install, I'd buy a copy today. Judging from the postings on the forum, there are quite a numbe of other people trying to do something similar.

Re: installing Vista on Proliant ML350 servers

I have been running XP pro on my ml350 g3
for 2 years. no problem. Have not tried vista as of yet. What raid controller do you have ?? If no xp driver exists for the
HP number, try to find out who made it for
them. Check the chip on the board. I will
lead you to the proper place.

Re: installing Vista on Proliant ML350 servers

The controller is the Smart Array 641/642 Controller, that according to the documentation supplied with the server. Do u happen to know whether I can install the controller driver from the Smart Start setup CD supplied with the server? Tx.

Re: installing Vista on Proliant ML350 servers

yes, it has it

just download the latest SmartStart CD 7.80 and when you install Vista select other OS and go ahead

that is the idea when you deploy a server that the Smartstart CD has all the controller for the smart array cards like yours

Re: installing Vista on Proliant ML350 servers

Any idea how/where I can download the latest SmartStart CD 7.80 software? Tried going to www.hp.com/servers/manage, as instructed by the Proliant user's manual, but didn't see that there. Tx.

Re: installing Vista on Proliant ML350 servers

Karlo, I'm back on this project. I downloaded and burned the SmartStart 7.80 file onto a CD. When u say "when you install Vista select other OS," where do I select other OS? Also, tried running the SmartStart 7.80 files and it doesn't list a Vista or "Other OS" option. So, I'm unsure what u r talking about. Tx,again, very much for ur help with this.

Re: installing Vista on Proliant ML350 servers

You could us the freeware package nLite to integrate the array sata/sas drivers with your vista install. had to do this for the ml110 but for s2003r2.

Re: installing Vista on Proliant ML350 servers

Karlo, I started by trying to install the OS manually, but no luck. In ur earlier posting u sd to select Other OS. What were u talking about? Darren, what procedure did u use with nLite to install the controller drivers? I looked at the utility and the description for it says it's used to remove Win components, not install them. Tx.

Re: installing Vista on Proliant ML350 servers

hi

see the attached file to see the procedure
I mean how to work with nlite don't worry about "Other OS"

it's much better use nlite

just download this driver for your controller
Smart Array 641/642
http://h18000.www1.hp.com/support/files/server/us/download/27556.html

and follow the steps in the attached file

Re: installing Vista on Proliant ML350 servers

Chip sorry for the delay.

for vista i just noticed u cant use nLite but you can use vLite ( http://www.vlite.net ) there is instructions there on how to integrate your driver packages. if not give me a shout and i can talk you through it.

Re: installing Vista on Proliant ML350 servers

Hi, tried using nLite to create a new install CD but when it prompts me to select a controller driver it doesn't list the option Karlo recommends I select. Instead, it shows me these driver options, which r the drivers Karlo recommended I download:

- Smart Array 5300 Controller
- Smart Array 5i, 532, 5312 Controllers
- Smart Array 6i, 641, 642, 6400, 6400OEM Controllers

Karlo, did I download the wrong drivers. Also, when usng nLite even if I select all 3 drivers nLite doesn't prompt me to select an OS. Karlo, the Word doc u emailed to me instructs me to select an OS when prompted to, but the prompt didn't appear. Even so, I went ahead and produced an ISO file and am going to burn it onto a CD and try to use it to see what happens. If it doesn't work, I'll try Darren's recommendation, which is to use vLite instead. Darren, since u seem certain that using nLite isn't going to work, could u pls go ahead and let me know the correct procedure for using vLite. Tx, again, to both u and to Karlo for ur help and expertise with this. It's much appreciated.

Re: installing Vista on Proliant ML350 servers

Hi chip

I have not tried vlite, but I think it's much better

http://www.nliteos.com/faq.html#Q29

so if you have a 641 controller
(please check this in the BIOS, Boot Controller Order)

the link that I gave you is the correct one
http://h18000.www1.hp.com/support/files/server/us/download/27556.html

this is the list of smart arrays supported for that driver

Smart Array 5x and 6x Controller Support

Smart 5300
Smart 5i
Smart 532
Smart 5312
Smart 6i
Smart 641
Smart 642
Smart 6400
Smart 6400 U320

Re: installing Vista on Proliant ML350 servers

Karlo, the install CD I created with nLite didn't work. Tried it with Vista and with XP Pro. With Vista I got the blue screen of death, and with XPPro I got an error message telling me the install file couldn't find the file ultra.sys. The 2nd time I tried installing XPPro I got the blue screen of death. Re the controller, the info on the Boot Controller Order screen lists the following:
- Ctlr:1 PCI Embedded HP 64Bit/133MHz PCI-X Dual Channel U320 HBA Port 1
- Ctlr:2 PCI Embedded HP Integrated PCI IDE Controller
- Ctlr:3 PCI Embedded HP 64Bit/133MHz PCI-X Dual Channel U320 HBA port 2

There's nothing on the screen indicating its a 641 controller (or anything else). Maybe I should be looking at something else. By the way, my preference is to get XPPro installed on the puter if possible, since all our other puters have XPPro. Having a single OS is much easier for support reasons, of course. Tx, again, for the help. Much appreciated.

Re: installing Vista on Proliant ML350 servers

Hi chip

about XP I was thinking to tell you try first with XP but you already did it

so really to ask you about to check the order controller at this point but I thought you were giving me the controller I asked again because the errors you were getting

now about this controller you have
Embedded HP 64Bit/133MHz PCI-X Dual Channel U320 HBA

this is the driver OK
http://h18000.www1.hp.com/support/files/server/us/download/27273.html

also some information about that controller
http://h18004.www1.hp.com/products/servers/proliantstorage/adapters/133mhz-dual/index.html
like for example is an not array-RAID just let JBOD
so this is not important because that is not going to be a server just a client I think?
no fault tolerance is needed

well chip just let us know OK

Re: installing Vista on Proliant ML350 servers

Darren, it is a G4, and I do intend to use it mostly as a mktg communications workstation. Karlo, if I understand your posting correctly, I was trying to install the wrong controller driver, correct?

I'm going to try to use vLite later today to see if I have any better luck with it.

now you check the boot controller order it's another controller

really sorry I make you waste so long time to ask you this

Re: installing Vista on Proliant ML350 servers

Not sure how the point system works but thought I should award u the points for ur effort. Need to do same for Darren. I tried installing XPPro using nLite and the new controller driver u recommended but could not get it to work. Also tried to install the controller driver manually, via floppy, but couldn't get that to work either. To get the system to read the data on the floppy I had to first format it as a DOS boot disk and then copy the controller files onto it. Based on everything I've read it's probably best to focus on getting XPPro installed, since other people have successfully done it on Proliant servers. I have a question for u and for Darren: once I get XPPro installed, will there be a performance hit? Would the puter perform much better with Win Server 2003 installed on it? Also, Darren, u offered to provide me with instructions on how to install a Win OS. If possible, would really appreciate getting that info. Pls also put up a brief posting so I can award u some points for ur effort to date. It's much appreciated.

Re: installing Vista on Proliant ML350 servers

hi chip

well what do you get when you include the new driver? what is the error on windows Installation?

it's the same error when we were trying 641 driver?

you can see this controller on POST?
64Bit/133MHz PCI-X Dual Channel U320 HBA

tell me something sorry by putting making this test
did you try installing XP or Vista without including any controller?
I mean the CD itself no F6 and so on
