ipmitool lan print on SLES 11.1 gives Invalid channel: 255 on ProLiant DL 380 G6

I am wits end trying to determine the lan channel to get ipmitool lan print command to give output.  Here is what I get:

# ipmitool lan print
Invalid channel: 255

ipmitool channel info 2
Channel 0x2 info:
Channel Medium Type : reserved
Channel Protocol Type : reserved
Session Support : session-less
Active Session Count : 0
Protocol Vendor ID : 0

How do I set up the lan channel:  Other similar servers work fine and ipmitool power status command also works
