lock on large file transfers

I support 46 schools which are going to Win2000 this summer
the problem we are currently having is when transferring large 500 meg + or lots of small files totalling over 500 meg then the server locks and all we can do is reboot
We have tried sp2 then changing to balance or maximum for file transfer
We are just rechecking the nic and scsi controller drivers.

any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
