ml350g5 and smartstart 7.90

I have a client with the following problem....

Trying to do a standard server install of W2K3 and SS 7.90.

Server boots to SS cdrom, loads to 99% at the initial boot screen and then goes black forever.

A manual install of Windows works, and then when applying PSP 7.90 from smartstart, the machine again goes completely black and dies. Can not even boot back into safe mode or anything.

All FW updated from 7.90 FW cd rom.

No extra devices on the system.

Any ideas??? I know that there has been some issues on and off with the nic drivers in 7.90, but from all accounts only gives problems on an upgrade to an existing system, not on the initial OS installation.

Personally, I have never had any trouble of any kind with 7.90 at all.

Thanks in advance,

Hello Mike,
Not sure what caused this; Have you tried another copy(fresh download) of the SS7.9 ??

Also, when the Manual install was a Success, you may install the PSP from :

until the mystery is solved.

Re: ml350g5 and smartstart 7.90

Here is some more info on this issue:

The initial problems were coming when the machine had 2 quad core processors in it.

After fumbling around, the 2nd one was removed and everything worked perfectly.

OS was installed, PSP 7.90 loaded etc.

Then, 2nd proc was put back into machine. Everything looks fine through the post and even Windows comes up with no issues. They tried to reload the PSP and it failed again, hanging when it is doing hardware discovery. Obviously, the 2nd proc is causing us the grief. Do you think it is simply a DOA proc?? We are getting stumped on this one.

As per your question, both 7.70 and 7.80 have also been tried to the exact result.

Re: ml350g5 and smartstart 7.90

Hello Mike,
Try the 2nd processor on the 1st one's SLOT;
See if that works fine; if it does, its not a DOA Processor;

I wonder why did you reinstall the PSPs when everything was honky dory !

Re: ml350g5 and smartstart 7.90

I will get him to try that. He did the reinstall of the PSP to see if that was what was causing the hang up on the PSP/Smartstart process.

Re: ml350g5 and smartstart 7.90

Well, If you want to find the Root cause, look at the Contents of the PSP... & install ONE Driver/agent at a time(the ones needed for ur server) & see how the server performs.

Once you get stuck on an Driver/Agent, you have your answer.

;) Good luck !
