moving drives to DL380 G6 from DL380 G5

I was wondering if I can remove local Hard Drives from a DL380 G5 and put them in a DL380 G6 and have them work?

Re: moving drives to DL380 G6 from DL380 G5

Which drive models specifically and from what raid controller in the G5 and to what raid controller in the G6?

Hey TTr,
The drive models are HP 146GB 6G SAS 10K 2.5in DP ENT HDD's

The Raid Controller card in the G6 is a Smart Array P410I

The Raid Controller card in the G5 is a Smart Array P400

Re: moving drives to DL380 G6 from DL380 G5

You should be able to use the drives. Not only that but if you have any arrays created on them and you move the full array set of drives, the P410 will find the arrays and logical drives on the disks with all the data.

There is data compatibility among SA raid controllers, look at bottom of page in http://h18004.www1.hp.com/products/servers/proliantstorage/arraycontrollers/smartarrayp400/index.html

Re: moving drives to DL380 G6 from DL380 G5

I recently tried this and it didn't work for me. I took a windows installation, I believe it was 6 sas disks in raid 10, and moved the disks from a dl380G5 to a dl380G6. There was an issue with the disk positions. I put all disk in the same slot but the controler was complaining about incorrect posstions. Perhaps it would have worked if I moved the disks around a bit but I didn't bother since this was only a test.
But I thought this was strange since you can move disks around on a DL380G5 and the controller will notice it and put things right again. Guess this is not the case when you move from P400 to P410.
