network adapter 640FLR-SFP28 hangs after switching to new switch port - how to reset?

Hi,

I've a problem with a HPE 640SFP network adapter (ConnectX-4 Lx chipset) and RHEL 8.5 - which is probably not OS related.

driver: mlx5_core
version: 4.18.0-348.el8.x86_64
firmware-version: 14.31.1200 (HP_2690110034)

For whatever reason the adapter (one of two ports) hangs after it is connected to a new network fabric (switch). It stays with link down and also does not change the state when plugged in to its original port. I've to shut down the server an remove power. It seems the adapter needs a full reset.

I tried ethtool and sysfs but it didn't work.

# ethtool --reset eno3
ethtool: bad command line argument(s)
For more information run ethtool -h

# echo "1" > /sys/class/net/eno3/device/reset

Anyone seen this before? Any way to reset the adapter port from ILO or Linux?
