proliant 1600 dual 300

I have some 256mB EDO ram pair out of a proliant 5000 and stuck it into the 1600 but when it boots it reads the memory ok but then says processor can't utilize all this memory warning- it then goes on to boot into windows 2000 server and hangs !!!!!! at the little white indicators first screen.

Any ideas?

rad, need more info.

How is you total memory configuration?
Witch slots are occupied by what type's of rams?

Do you use original HP memory?

Re: proliant 1600 dual 300

This machine actually only supports a total of 512 mb:

You can use over 512, but the processor cache can only access 512 mb of the system memory. This is a limitation of the chipset.
The truth is out there, but I forgot the URL..

Re: proliant 1600 dual 300

I use memory expansion board

Expansion Board
Banks 1 2 3 4 have 64Mb EDO Original compaq RAM
Banks 5 6 7 8 empty

On main board have
Banks 1 2 have 64 Mb EDO original compaq RAM
Banks 3 4 empty

TOTAL = 380Mb

I thought with expansion memory board that you could get to 1 GIG RAM?

Thx for answers :-) Rad

Checked pdf and it states 512mB is max - no way round this if chipset can't
