Re: proliant 5500 ppro upgrade?
You did not say whether you were upgrading to a 6/450 Xeon or a 6/500 Xeon. At any rate, a very good place to look for the type of info you want would be online for the very detailed descriptions/tech specs for The 5500 Xeon on the 5500 PP200. I have used these descriptions and tech specs religiously over the years when researching new servers to configure.
Since the 2 servers you are dealing with are now 'retired', I suggest you look at the retired servers website:
http://h18004.www1.hp.com/products/servers/platforms/retired.html and then pull down the 5500 Xeon with the processor that you have. You may also want to look at the info on the 5500 PP 200 when you get there. Like I said, there is a WEALTH of info on each product there.
Good Luck!!

Re: proliant 5500 ppro upgrade?
I looked at the reference manuals you pointed me to. A couple things.
1) The manual for the Xeons said it's for Netware 4.x, whereas the one for the PP200 said non-os specific. This was right on the Title page for each model. Don't know if this really makes a difference, but the fact that they made this distinction might mean something. What OS are you running? I had assumed NT or W2K.
2)In looking at the exploded parts lists, I saw the differences that you already mentioned. Plus there were differences in some of the other part numbers. Have you already spoken to Compaq Tech Support to see if you can do this kind of in-box upgrade from PP to Xeon? If not, you probably need to do so. They would also probably be a good source to find out about the scsi and/or firmware upgrades needed if this upgrade can be done.
3) I did not see specifically where this canNOT be done, but before you call Compaq, I'd advise you to look through the info on the website I pointed you to, if you have not already done so. This might give you some answers, and/or maybe some more questions.
Hope this helps a little.
