Re: proliant 5500 upgrade

Ken: basically you would have to replace everything in the chasis.
Enjoy!

Re: proliant 5500 upgrade

True, Ken. No upgrade path like that. You have a need for speed?
I would look into a good used unit with the specs you desire from a private party on eBay. We have a great source up in Canada, reliable.

Re: proliant 5500 upgrade

I don't think Ken likes the answer. The 5500 Pentium Pro model had a design that was "intended" to have an upgrade path to the PII processors. I think that was one of Compaq's wild dreams that never came to pass. I have never seen this "upgrade path" ever documented. I think that as time went on, Compaq decided to invest in PII Xeon Processors for the server line, which created a design difference to radical for the PPro model to achieve. I think they scrapped the idea.

How about an alternative...

You say you have the 5500 with 3 processors. You can add one more PPro200 to the server and get Quad processing (which is nice at any speed) Alternatively, the P Pro 200 with 1MB Cache are available and you can buy 4 processors for the box using larger cache.

You can also maximize the RAM in the server up to 3GB.

Take care!
Enjoy!
