"Alerter" Service - windows 2003

Is the "Alerter" service necessary for the HP Event Notifier to function properly and send email notifications of hardware failures?

No - I don't think so. I believe the HP Event Notifier uses only SMTP to send messages.

The Alerter service is a Microsoft service that I think used to be used for sending network messages to users and/or computers via the "net send" command. I think for security reasons, you want to leave this service disabled.
