rebuild of array

We are having problems with a rebuild of an array on a dl380.

We have a windows 2000 server on a dl380 g2 model attached to an external array (PROLIANT 4LEE) using 69 Gig drives with the smart array 5i controller. The suite of drivers we are using is 7.10. We are also using raid 5 (distrubuted data guarding) on teh array in question.

We had a failure on drive 1 but it failed to rebuild because of hard read errors on drive 8. In the current state, drive 1 will not rebuild and if we change drive 8 we will lose the array because two drives will fail. Drive 8 has 264 hard read errors according the the insight manager agents.

Re: rebuild of array

It looks like you've determined what the cause of the problem is. Are you asking if there is anything else that could be done besides replacing drive 8?
The truth is out there, but I forgot the URL..

Re: rebuild of array

Is there any way I can recover the array without rebuilding it.
In my case it appears that if a drive gets hard read errors it will not allow any other drives to rebuild if they are part of the array. If this is the case, why is the hot spare not kicking in when drive 8 first reported the ahrd read errors.
