testing UPS

Can you please advise how to test a Comapq UPS to determine whether the power/surge protection is still working. A severe storm sent a series of large power spikes which somehow got through the UPS and brought the servers down. After a few problems the system was rebooted but since then we have been experiencing intermittent freezes.

Since the UPS is acting as a "firewall" is there any way of testing it to ensure that the protection features are still in place?
