transfer RAM from D360 G7 into a Gen8 server??

I am working on explaining why we need to upgrade production servers...

One question that came to mind is whether the RAM in a DL360 G7 server can be re-used into a Gen8 server????

Is this possible, are there any caveats involved etc.????

Thank you, Tom

Re: transfer RAM from D360 G7 into a Gen8 server??

Hey!

According to Quickspecs, prior generations of memory are not supported in any new Gen8 servers.

Sorry....we were caught in that net ourselves...

Re: transfer RAM from D360 G7 into a Gen8 server??

hi

gen8 servers want to see smart memory.

in my dl380p gen8 i have 12 dimms (various sizes) from verious gen6 server running nicely since multiple months.

as memory is directly attached to the processor(s) the memory runs fine - be it smart memory or not.

if it is original hp memory you should not worry at all. the processor will automatically set the integrated memory controllers to the right speed and RAS/CAS settings.

best regards

ernesto

Two completely different replies -- hard to know which one is correct, sigh...

Thank you, Tom

Re: transfer RAM from D360 G7 into a Gen8 server??

Tom,

In my post I mentioned that prior memory is not supported (by HP) to use in a Gen 8 server

As indicated above it could be used, but if server is under HP support or warranty, you might get into a pi$$ing contest w/HP if you are having server hardware or software issues.

If it is not under a contract or warranty then you have to weigh the risk...
