unable to boot ml370G1 with Samrt Start 5.4

I am currently changing the operating system on my server to windows 2003, after installing new larger hard drives.

When I boot my server with the Smart Start CD in the CD drive it goes as far as displaying the Smart Start splash screen then the screen goes black and then nothing..

I have tried 3 differet CD roms but I am unable to get the CD to run.

I have tried the CD on another server and it runs fine.

All I am trying to do is run a system erase to then allow me to reconfigure the server.

The Floppy Disk drive has been removed from this server so I am unable to boot from disk.

Does anyone know of a way around this?? is there a manual way or running a system erase??

Hello Chris,

Try SSCD 5.50 http://h18023.www1.hp.com/support/files/server/us/download/22678.html

Also boot from the Firmware Maintenance CD 7.50 and update all firmwares.

Whats the model of the pci smart array controller?

Re: unable to boot ml370G1 with Samrt Start 5.4

i Have tried downloading the smart start 5.50 disk and running this but still to no avail. I am thinking that my BIOS may been corrupted.

I tried connecting a floppy drive to boot from disks but the drive is disabled in the BIOS and I can not access this to re-enable it.

Is there anyway to manually reset the server, what about clearing the NVRAM and starting all over again?

Thanks

You could try clearing NVRAM either from RBSU or from the Maintenance switch on the system board.
Boot from the Firmware Maintenance CD 7.50 and update all firmwares.

Re: unable to boot ml370G1 with Samrt Start 5.4

HI,
As Smart Start 7.51 is not supported on ML370G1 and Smart Start 5.5 doesn├в t support Windows 2003 operating system, you can download the controller driver from the following link and follow the manual installation to install the operating system on the server.

http://h18007.www1.hp.com/support/files/server/us/download/23379.html

Please follow the procedure given below to install the operating system.

1. Download the controller driver and save it on to a Diskette.
2. Boot the server using Operating System CD.
3. Press F6 during the installation to load the controller driver.
4. Use the controller driver diskette to update the driver.
5. Select the controller from the list displayed and press ENTER
6. Follow the installation process

Thanks for the reply Sandeep.

Do you know where the instructions are for clearing the NVRAM and what Disks I need when the machine resets.

Thanks.

Re: unable to boot ml370G1 with Samrt Start 5.4

Hi Kiran,

Thanks for the reply but I do not just want to install the operating system.

I have configured my other server using Smart Start 5.4 and setting the operating system as windows 2000. When it asks for the operating system disk I have installed windows 2003 and then installed the latest PSP.

I have used this method numerous times before and I have never had a problem with this installation methos before.

Re: unable to boot ml370G1 with Samrt Start 5.4

Hi,

here's a link to the maintenance and service guide for the ML370 G1:
http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bc/docs/support/UCR/SupportManual/TPM_143091-004/TPM_143091-004.pdf

On page 126 the diagram shows you where the DIP Switches are. You want SW2 (with 6 switches)

Proceed as follows:
- Power off server, disconnect power from server
- Open the chassis, find Switch Bank SW2, Set Switch number 6 to ON
- Reconnect power, power on server, Wait about 30 seconds
- Power off server, disconnect power from server
- Set SW2 switch 6 back to off

NVRAM is now cleared

Also check if your CDROM drive is jumpered correctly (Compaq servers use Cable Select, but you could also try jumpering it to Master).

Regards,
Stephen
