unable to upgrade ILO firmware

Hello all,

For unattended reasons we want to upgrade ILO firmware by using Online ROM Flash. Untill now, we cannot perform the operation.

The first error I get was the following :
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Setup Session Beginning 5/9/2003 - 10:46:07 AM
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Command Line Parameters Given:

Beginning Interactive Session...

Name: Integrated Lights-Out ROM Flash Update - Windows NT/2000
New Version: 1.20

The software does not need to be installed on this system.

Installation will not continue.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
End Session
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

I checked the different drivers installed and I saw that hp ProLiant Integrated Lights-Out Management Interface
Driver for Windows 2000/.NET Server 2003 was not present. I installed it successfuly, then rebooted the server (I was not asked but I was still having the same error)

Now I have this error :
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Setup Session Beginning 5/9/2003 - 11:13:35 AM
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Command Line Parameters Given:

Beginning Interactive Session...

Name: Integrated Lights-Out ROM Flash Update - Windows NT/2000
New Version: 1.20

The software is not installed on this system, but is supported for
installation.

Error: Could not communicate with Channel Interface (CHIF) (errcode=2)

The operation was not successful.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
End Session
---------------------------------------------------------------------------

I also retried after a reboot of the ILO : still the same.

In addition, the ILO cannot get the name of the server (with W2K installed), and in the other way the compaq Agents (6.20) says that no management processor is present.

I guess that my OS + agents cannot discuss with the ILO. Maybe I am missing one more driver but I don't know what. Could you help me ? Here is the list of installed driver/agent on the server (DL580 G2) :

Re: unable to upgrade ILO firmware

David,

I have not tried the online flash for iLo, but have had success in flasing the ROM from the web interface for the iLo.

If you login as Administrator, you can select the Administration tab, then select Upgrade iLo Firmware. You are then prompted for the location of the bin file. After the upgrade file is sent to the iLo adapter, it will restart itself and you will have to login again.

Re: unable to upgrade ILO firmware

You are right I can be also upgraded by the web interface. But our goal is to do the job during the installation of the server via an unattended script. So that's why we want to use the Online Flash

Re: unable to upgrade ILO firmware

I would recommend going into control panel, open HP/Compaq Management Agents and verify the remote insight information is an active agent. It's probably inactive currently.

I'm not sure this would be the reason the rom flash is failing, but is likely the reason the server name is not seen at the ILO and the agents don't see it either.
The truth is out there, but I forgot the URL..

Re: unable to upgrade ILO firmware

Terry,

Thanks for this answer. The "sub-agent" Remote Insight Agent was not active. It solved the "host is unnamed" problem. But the problem with online flash is still present.

Half of the problem is then solved.

Re: unable to upgrade ILO firmware

Hello all,

For your information,

The problem I described occured on a server on which the Compaq Support Pack has not been installed on 1 shot. Probably one component is missing or bad installed or ????

I installed another server from scratch with all the CPS 6.20 in one shot, and I was unable to reproduce the problem (even the "Remote Information Agent" not activated)

So I guess that the problem came from our procedure of install.
