upgrading scsii drive on proliant ml350 g2

Hi,

I have proliant ml350g2 server with raid5 configured 3x36.4gb i want it to upgrade to 3x146gb without losing the data can any body help me thanks.

the first answer should be:
- make a complete system and data back-up.
- change old 3x36 gb HDs with new 3x146 GB HDs.
- reconfigure your array
- restore system and data.

thanks for the reply im using hot swap scsii hardrive with smart array 641 controller actually i want to replace the 3x36.4gb drive and replace all with 3x146gb without losing the data. can you tell me some advice regarding this thanks

Hi,

If I remember correctly, you should have a hot-swap-bay for 6 HDs.

if you want to expand from a 3x36 raid5 to a 3x146 raid5, I ssuggest to do this:

- insert the new 3 HDs 146Gb.
- create your new raid5 using the new 3 HDs.
- make a complete back-up from the 3x36 raid5 to the new one.
- power off your system
- extract the old 3x36.
- power-on your system booting from the new 146x3 raid5.

Hi Ariel!

I you want to do this without downtime, do like this...

1. As allways make a complete backup of your array.

2. Replace one 36.4 GB drive with a 146 GB drive. Wait until rebuild of raid is finished.

3. repeat step 2 until you have replaced all the 36.4 GB drives...

4. Go to ACU, now you will se that you have free space in the array, choose to resize the logical volume so that all free space is used.

5. If the array holds the bootpartition you need to use either volume growth from HP or another software that allows you to strech a bootpartition.
If the arrays only hold data you can use diskpart utility from MS.

Hi,

yes, it is a way Ariel can follow.
I suggested to do the operation Off-line (if it is possible), only for the needed time to rebuild 3 times the arrai.
