we want asr to shutdown the system instead of rebooting

how and where we can change asr in hp dl 580 g5 servers so as to shutdown the server when asr is triggered instead of rebooting it.

Re: we want asr to shutdown the system instead of rebooting

Hi, looked through the BIOS settings and it seems like that is not possible from the default settings. It also seems to not be the functionality intended by the ASR.

Question:
If the server becomes unresponsive with ASR disabled, what happens then? Does it just freeze in a bluescreen/kernel panic?

RBSU user guide:
http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bc/docs/support/SupportManual/c00191707/c00191707.pdf

Description of the ASR feature:

"Automatic Server Recovery
ASR is a feature that causes the system to restart when a catastrophic operating system error
occurs, such as a blue screen, ABEND, or panic. A system fail-safe timer, the ASR timer, starts
when the System Management driver, also known as the Health Driver, is loaded. When the
operating system is functioning properly, the system periodically resets the timer. However,
when the operating system fails, the timer expires and restarts the server.
ASR increases server availability by restarting the server within a specified time after a system
hang or shutdown. At the same time, the HP SIM console notifies you by sending a message to
a designated pager number that ASR has restarted the system. You can disable ASR from the
HP SIM console or through RBSU."

Re: we want asr to shutdown the system instead of rebooting

I think when ASR kicks in the system is past a normal shutdown procedure.
Therefore this would not be possible by design because of the nature of ASR.
A system hang or BSOD would not allow a normal shutdown.
