Adding an additional SCSI disk as its own disk

Hello, I have a Proliant ML 350 (and a 370 actually) with a Smart Array controllers. It currently has 3 Ultra-Wide 72Gig disks, setup with Raid 5 redundancy. It hosts a Windows Server 2003 Small Business Server operating system.

I have an additional hard disk of the same type and capacity, that I'd like to install, but I do not want it be part of the Array. I want to use it as an additional disk, separate from the array, to show as an additional physical drive letter in Windows Server, for storing backups to. Is this possible?

I was wondering if I can just insert the disk into an empty hot-swappable slot on the server or do I need to reboot and use the Smart Array controllers bios settings to configure? (Im not sure since its not going to be a part of an array).

I havent done anything yet, its a live system and users are at work.

Thank you very much for any assistance you may provide.

Re: Adding an additional SCSI disk as its own disk

Sure:

Insert the disk.
Open up the ACU.
Create a new array with the 1 new disk.
Define a Logical Drive based on the newly available space.

There is no option to just "use" the disk as is, you have to create an array.

Ahh, ok. I thought an array had to be made up of multiple disks. Thanks a lot, I'll get started on that today.

Take care.
