CPU load balancing on DL385 G2

Hi,

We have a DL385 G2 server. It has two dual core AMD opeteron CPUs. So in the Windows Task Manager we will be able to see effectively 4 CPUs (CPU 0,1,2 and 3).

Some days back, we had an issue on the server where the CPU 3 had a very high (over 85% - 90%) CPU utilization but other CPUs were nearly sitting idle.

We opened HP Home management page and checked in there that the total CPU interrupts/sec on the system was approx 5400 out of which 5100 interrupt/sec was on CPU 3 alone.

After some time the CPU utilization came down automatically.

I just need to know is there any way (in BIOS or in OS) where we can configure the CPUs for load balancing.

We are running Windows 2003 Std edition with SP1. The server is a domian controller.

It should be balancing the load across the cores automatically.

What was the process that was utilizing CPU 3 at 90%, and have you confirmed that it is a multithreaded process?

In the task manager, "system idle process" was occupying most of CPU.

Re: CPU load balancing on DL385 G2

System Idle Process is the Windows null process. If there is no other activity from 'real' processes on that core, it simply means that the core is idle. I'd be concerned if any process other than System Idle process was at or near 100%.

Did you see another issue, or was the fact that only System Idle Process was high concern you?

Under normal conditions with little CPU load, the System Idle Process should always be high.
