Compaq Proliant 1850R Server Gigabit NIC

I've got a problem using my 1850R Series Server. It's running on W2K SP4. I can't let any gigabit ethernet controller run on that machine. I've tested a Compaq fibre wire Gigabit nic and also a RJ45 D-Link Ethernet Controller. Both aren't identified in Windows. It means no unknow Hardware - nothing like this. Is it needet so start the SmartStart CD? I've done it but don't know where to configure the card there.

Re: Compaq Proliant 1850R Server Gigabit NIC

Hi Gunnar:

Whenever you ad a pci card to the server you will have to go to the System Config utility SCU or F10 that is the bios for the server and update it for the card to add resources for it.

- you can go to the bios by pressing F10 if it is installed. it is the EISA partion

- if not installed ; can be run from smartstart cd 5.50 - www.hp.com/servers/smartstart.

or from Sp19619.exe (floppy version for the SCU)..http://h18000.www1.hp.com/support/files/server/us/download/13227.html

once the card and or bios has been updated for the card that is added.
- then when you go to windows ; it should be detected and or install the Proliant support pack the latest one is 7.40 http://h18000.www1.hp.com/support/files/server/us/download/22870.html - and it will update the driver for it.

Hope this helps.

Tarek.

Re: Compaq Proliant 1850R Server Gigabit NIC

thanks for your fast answear. i have had a look in the smart start menu and i have done automatic configuration for pci components (hope the translation is ok i've got the german version). No change! Don't know what to do to add the card.

I think normaly it isn't needed to change anything in the bios because the os has directly access to the pci bus?!

Can you try to explain an step by step instruction to chnage the bios to let the card run?

The strange thing is i installed a 3Com NIC in the system, Windows has detected it and everything is fine, but when i try to use any gigabit ethernet controller nothing happens

Re: Compaq Proliant 1850R Server Gigabit NIC

Hi Gunnar:

The automatic configuration is good and perfect.

- next what you need to check is make sure you have the latest Bios for the server

- and make sure that the gig card is being detected at POST (when server boots up)

- once you are in the o/s ; then you will need to run the latest Support paq from HP.

There is also a flash for the nic card
- will need to know what nic card you are installing

- -
If all above dosenot work; then you cannot use that card on that server.
- you are using Legacy or old system with new technology; ; the card is too fast for the bus and the bus is too slow for the card.

Good luck .

Re: Compaq Proliant 1850R Server Gigabit NIC

thanks again for your answear. I solved the problem! I hope i can discribe it in english. There is that brown slot where the adapter board is in. On that adapter board there are 4 pci und and isa slot, you now what i'm talking about? The connection pins (that golden stripes) where a little oxidized. I've cleaned them and refittet the adapter board and the card runs!
