DL 380 G5 Fan Configurations

Hi

Wonder if someone has an answer to this. I have a DL380 G5 server with a 6 FAN configuration, 16 GB Memory and Dual Quad Core Processors.

I have another DL380 G5 Server, Standard Config with 12 FAN configuration. If I install the system board from the second server into the first server it comes up with a FAN Failure error light on all the FANS on the Front Diagnostics Panel. The server boot though without any problems.I have tried updating the BIOS no luck. The part numbers are exactly the same.

Any Help??????

Re: DL 380 G5 Fan Configurations

Hello,
From March 1st 2007 HP has begun shipping ProLiant DL380 G5 and DL385 G2 servers with 6 system fans; a reduction from the 12 system fans shipped in models prior to the transition date.

Memory Air baffle : 408782-001 for 12 fan config ;;; 442952-001 for 6 fan config

Processor Fan cage Assembly: 408783-001 for 12 fan config ;;; 442953-001 for 6 fan config

I/O fan Cage Assembly: 408784-001 for 12 fan config ;;; 442954-001 for 6 fan config

Fan-board PCA : 408791-001 for 12 fan config ;; 442955-001 for 6 fan configuration.

AS you can see there is a major difference in between the two.

Also see the attachment.

Re: DL 380 G5 Fan Configurations

Thanks

This finally makes sense! I will remember this.
Just one last question, the part number for the system board is the same though?

Thanks

Re: DL 380 G5 Fan Configurations

Ok but why would it gives errors when I swop a system board from a unit with 12 fan config and a unit with a 6 fan config. The part numbers for the system boards are exactly the same.

Re: DL 380 G5 Fan Configurations

I have come across this thread a bit late though, i think it will be useful to somebody referring this case later on.

I DL380G5 it was originally shipped with 12 FANs. And for sure the mainboard and system components are designed for 12 FANs. Later on they decided to go with 6 fans. I think they have done some changes in the firmware and put a small jumber on an empty FAN connector on the main board. So, if the system sees that there is a jumber, then it expects only ^ fans. Otherwise, if the system doesn't see a jumber, it expects it is a 12 FAN system. I think in the above case the new motherboard which is replaced doesn't have that jumber connected. (It looks like a plastic cover on to of the fan connector)

i hope this helps.
