DL380 G4 6i Array best configuration question
hi,
we are about to set up a DL380G4 (high performance model) for a oracle database server running on Windows2003.
At this point I can not find anything on the internet on how to configure the array to obtain best performance.
I have 6x72GB HDD (15k) and want to use them as 3 RAID-1 volumes.
The configuration says that I have 2 channels ( 4 HDD on channel 2 and 2 HDDs on channel 1 ).
Are there any whitepapers on how many arrays I should configure? E.g.
3 arrays having each a logical drive running RAID-1 using 2 HHDs
or
1 array with 3 logical drives running RAID-1 using 2 HDDs each?
Further should I place the OS on the first RAID on channel 1 and put the data and index volume on channel 2 ? Or rather put the data volume on channel 1 and the index and OS on channel 2 ?
I want max performance out of the machine.
Thanks
Ed

Re: DL380 G4 6i Array best configuration question
Actually, the DL380 G4 using the SCSI Terminator Board to split the backplane allows only the following configuration:
Port 1 - 4 HDD's - Bay 2,3,4 and 5
Port 2 - 2 HDD's - Bay 0 and 1
It is backward from what I would consider normal, but the resulting performance is the same.
Launch the ORCA, and you'll see what I mean.

Re: DL380 G4 6i Array best configuration question
Be carreful with port 2 which can't rebuild dynamicly a raid which as lost a HDD. You have to reboot after replacing HDD for reconstruction.

Re: DL380 G4 6i Array best configuration question
Laroche, I haven't encountered that problem with the DL380 G4.
Which slot contained the failed drive?
Which firmware level were you using on the Smart Array 6i?
