DL380 G4 SCSI bus downshift Problem

DL380 G4 SCSI bus downshift Problem

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Problem:
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

When I start this server it will execute a SCSI-bus Shiftdown within a day, resulting in a very slow disk responses (File copy of about 5-8MB/s which normally does about 20-30MB/s)

The Windows EvenViewer reports:
o Type: Error
o Source: disk
o Event: 11
o Description: The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Harddisk 3

These errors are ONLY reported for the 4x 300GB disken (2,3,4,5) and occure randomly for all 4 disks and NEVER for the 2x 72GB Boot disks (0,1)

The eventlog has reported about 1000 of these error messages over the past 9 months

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
System Information:
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Server: HP ProLiant DL380 G4 Server

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
System Configuration:
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

o 2x 3.6Ghz Xeon - 3600DP / 800Mhz / 2MB
o 4x HP 1GB PC2-3200R Geheugen
o 2x HP 72GB BF0728B26A (Firmware HPB9) (Array A: RAID 1+0)
o 4x HP 300GB BD3008A4C6 (Firmware HPB4 C) (Array B: RAID 5)
o Smart Array 6i + BBWC (346914-B21)

OS: Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition R2 (32-bit) SP2 (Build 3790)

All the latest HP Drivers & Firmwares have been applied:

o ProLiant Support Pack for Microsoft Windows Server 2003 7.91 A (28 Sep 07)
o Firmware Maintenance CD 7.91 (6 Nov 07)
o DL380 G4 Firmware: 2006.04.26 (P51)
o Smart Array 6i Firmware: 2.80 (Rev B, v2.80)
o Smart Array 6i Driver: 5.78.0.32 (25 Jul 07 / Driver Date: 20-6-2007)

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
HP Event Notifications:
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

o SCSI bus fault occurred on Storage Box box 0, , Port 1 of Array Controller . This may result in a "downshift" in transfer rate for one or more hard drives on the bus.

The "HP System Management Homepage" reports: no failed/degrade items
The "HP Insight Diagnostics" does not report relevant errors

Full Event Logs are available

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Conclusion:
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The only thing I can think of is that the SCSI Backplane or the embedded SA6i controller is defective

It is not related to the 300GB disks as the errors where already there when they were added (they replaced 4x 146GB)

Re: DL380 G4 SCSI bus downshift Problem

The firmwares on all drives are at the latest revision already

So the given document is relevant but already implemented

I do not think it is a firmware related issue

Re: DL380 G4 SCSI bus downshift Problem

I see, but Why does the Attachment you posted says the same as per the article ?

11/17/2007 23:11:21 Firmware update needed for Physical Drive on Procuct ID BF0728B26A of Array Controller . Recommended minimum Version of HPB9

Re: DL380 G4 SCSI bus downshift Problem

It's an older part of the log, as after applying the Firmware Maintenance CD 7.91 the 2 firmwares were updated to HPB9 (as stated above) and the downshift problem has not gone away

Re: DL380 G4 SCSI bus downshift Problem

wow ! In that case, its either the Backplane or the cables.
