Expand RAID5 On dl380 G3 Server.

Hi,

We have a Proliant DL380 G3 with RAID5(3 72 GB disks).I installed 2 new 300 GB Disks. In the ACU I can see the new Expand Menu Item when I select the existing Array. What can I do with the Expand command ? What will be the best way (in terms of available storage, having fault tolerance) to configure the new disks ?

Regards.

Re: Expand RAID5 On dl380 G3 Server.

Hi,

if you expand your existing array you will be wasting space. Adding 2x 300GB disks to an array with 3x 72GB disks will only use 72GB of each 300GB disk, wasting about 440GB of raw capacity. You would be better off creating a new RAID-1 array with the 300GB disks. Then you would have 300GB available space, instead of only around 140GB if you added them to the existing array.

Re: Expand RAID5 On dl380 G3 Server.

it's a good idea to let a "small disk" without raid configuration (18gb..) for the windows swap, printer files etc etc, because this files may cause a lot of fragmentation on OS raid disks.
If you run Terminal Server, it's VERY important to do that.
