KVM switch limits monitor resolution

connecting a monitor directly to the HP Proliant DL380 server
allows me to select a screen resolution of 1280x1024.
Disconnecting the monitor and connecting the KVM switch leaves
the resolution unchanged. However when rebooting the server will
reset the display resolution back to 1024x768.
