Proliant 1600 upgrade

Hi I have a proliant 1600 server with a pentium II 400 Mhz. I've read in numerous places that it can support dual pentium III's. Now my question is:

1) My pentium has a FSB of 100Mhz, does it matter if I add two PIII with a FSB of 133?
2) Is there any BIOS changes I would have to make or will the machine accept the PIII's with no problem if I install them with the VRMs.
3) Its my first time doing this and I don't want to fry this machine.
4) Is it hard installing a large scsi HD on these things?

Hi.

Look at
http://h18000.www1.hp.com/products/quickspecs/10034_div/10034_div.HTML
and there in the "OPTIONS". There you will find the following:

"OptionsProcessor
6/600 Pentium III 512K Processor Option Kit 153555-B21
6/550 Pentium III 512K Processor Option Kit 124779-B21
6/500 Pentium III 512K Processor Option Kit 401268-B21
6/450 Pentium II 512K Processor Option Kit 313618-B21
6/400 Pentium II 512K Processor Option Kit 313612-B21
6/350 Pentium II 512K Processor Option Kit 313611-B21
Note: To Upgrade 400-MHZ, 450-MHz, or 500-MHZ models to the 550-MHz or 600-MHz or when upgrading a 550-MHz to the 600-MHz model, installation of an additional Thermal Upgrade Option Kit (144003-B22) is required. Failure to install this kit when upgrading may cause damage to the server and will void the warranty."

You also find the suported HDD in this document.

Re: Proliant 1600 upgrade

Thank you, i just bought two of the kits (aka the PIIIs 550Mhz with the VRMs). I hope the installation will go easy. I heard I have to make changes on the board through a couple of switches in order to handle the 550 Mhz. There is a diagram on the box itself but I can hardly understand. I'll try again later tonight or tomorrow. Thanks for helping me out.

Re: Proliant 1600 upgrade

Steve,

I'm trying to do the same. My 1600 currently has a single P2 450. I have two extra P3 500's that I'd like to put in. It seems I only need a new VRM. Do you happen to know the Part Number for the VRM you used?

No I don't have the VRM part number but any VRM used for the PII or PIIIs should do from what I was told.

Re: Proliant 1600 upgrade

I am also in the process of upgrading a Proliant 1600. I have the processor upgrade kit and have installed the processors. However, when I boot up the machine nothing happens. The lights come on and such but the monitor never gets a signal. Is there anything else that I need to swap out to up grade to 600Mhz?

Re: Proliant 1600 upgrade

Hmm.. I just switched to 550MHz. The only thing I had to do is update the compaq hardware settings but my monitor turned on that's for sure. Maybe the processors are defective!

Re: Proliant 1600 upgrade

What settings need to be updated. Maybe that is the problem. I so see a seires of switches on the processor board and the system board.
