Proliant 8500 cpu upgrade procedure

Cpus are all -
SL4XX 700mz 100FSB 2mb L2 5v/12v Stepping B0

I have installed a matching set of these 700mhz cpus into my 8500, it will power up for a few seconds then shut down....and repeat.
It has been running fine for months with a set 550 mhz 2mb L2 cpus.

The cpu tray dip switchs are all 'down' allowing the rom to auto detect the cpus.
The rom is flashed and is latest revision P42.

Yes, I have read the spec pages.
Yes, I read downloaded ALL the pdf files.
Yes, I read through the forums.
Any suggestions?

700MHz models 7
switch# 1-ON
switch# 2-OFF
switch# 3-ON
switch# 4-OFF

Thanks for the info.
I will try the settings you suggest and report back.

I moved the switches (1 and 3) and reseated the procs.
Same result.
System powers up for a few seconds and shuts down.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

Hi Steve:

okay turn the switch back to default off.
-
NO how many processors do you have in the server
- try with just 4 and make sure that the terminators are all in and cache module is installed for each side of the processors.

processors are 4+4 = 8.
there is two cache modules for each 4 procs.

your issue looks like an interlock or fan or heat issues. when the server comes up and goes down right away with in 5 to 10 seconds.

are there any diagnostics lights coming on on the main board.

There is a Processor Power Module (PPM) for terminating the two Processor busses. This PPM is independent of the PPMs that are required for each processor. The PPM in Slot 9 and the PPMs for the processors are identical and can be interchanged for troubleshooting purposes

Make sure that all the 3 modules, media bay, processor cage, and i/o cage are seated properly on the midplane.

Installed the 700's and some terminators.
I only have 2 terminators.
I got the same results.
Then I tried a pair of SL49S cpu's.
These are 700's 2m L2 but the stepping is A1.
The system posted, it identified all the procs correctly.
Then it disabled the first 4 procs (sl4xx) and reports the sl49s correctly.
Then it reports that the processors are unsupported and " physical rom change is required"

Can I flash the rom?
Where do I get a rom chip to run 700's?

I plan to buy 8 xeon 700MHz/1M (SL49P) or 8 xeon 700MHz/2M (SL49R) to upgrade my 4x550 proliant 8500. Will it be ok by just replacing cpus, ppms & cache accelerators or will I need an upgraded rom ?
