Very slow opening Office files and Documents
Last weekend we installed a new HP Proliant ML150-G6 E5504 file server with Windows server 2003 - 64 bit O/S. The installation and data migration went well however we are experiencing one very weird problem: Office 2003 Word and Excel files that are accessed through mapped drives on the server are taking a long time to open - much longer than on our 8 year old Dell Poweredge with Windows 2000 Server. We have researched the web on this and many users seem to have the same problem with no definite solution. We have tried the following: 1. Turning of DDE for the file types, 2)Changing intranet settings on IE, 3) Reinstalling Office 2003, 4) Changing some registry settings "EnableShellDataCaching" and 5. Checking for lastest versions of Kerberos.dll. None of these modifications made any improvement. Please help.

Re: Very slow opening Office files and Documents
Hi, this is related to network printer.
1- change default printer on user desktop
2- delete metadata on office document
Word keep trace of last printer used in document and try to connect on this printer when reopening document. If this shared printer is no more connected on network or server down, it will delay the opening.
Open a word document in notepad and you will see trace of network printer like \\server\printer
Good luck.

Re: Very slow opening Office files and Documents
Bonjour Sylvain,
Thank you for your response. The network printer does not seem to be the problem here. It is independent of the new server. Just to make sure, I deleted the printer and re-installed it on a couple of workstations, then I created a couple of new test documents in Word and saved them on the mapped shared drive. Opening these files from Explorer still results in long delays.
