Which ProLiant 800s can be upgraded to PIII 600 ?

Hi,

I have a PL800 with two PIII 600 processors and a bum system board. I can easily find earlier PL800s for sale, PII 400 to PIII 500 or so, and I wonder if one of these machines will accept my PIII 600 processors and VRMs, as long as I update the BIOS and set the core/bus ratio switches appropriately. I see there are two sys brd part numbers, 144574-001 ("550 MHz") and 155348-001 ("600 MHz") ... does that mean I *can't* upgrade anything pre-600 to 600, without changing the system board too? That doesn't seem like it can be right, because the QuickSpecs mention upgradeability. Were there some models that could be upgraded to PIII 600 and some that couldn't?

Also, what *is* the "144003-B22 Thermal Upgrade Kit"? I've only found one link anywhere that has a picture, and it looks like a couple fans and some other parts I can't make out. Can anyone who's installed this kit give a better description? Are the new fans added to the system, or used to replace old fans? Are they bigger? What's different?

Thanks,
Chap

ProLiant 800 with Configuration codes: CNL1, CNL3, CSG1, CSG3, DDK1, DDK3 should take the 155348-001 System/Processor Board (600 MHz System)with the Intel 440BX chipset.

See http://h18000.www1.hp.com/products/quickspecs/10539_div/10539_div.HTML

Which will explain about the thermal upgrade kit.

(To upgrade 500 MHz models to 550 MHz or 600 MHz or when upgrading a 550 MHz to the 600 MHz model, installation of an additional Thermal Upgrade Option Kit (144003-B22) is required. Failure to install this kit when upgrading may cause damage to the server and will void the warranty.)

Thanks Jerry for the reply that completely answers the questions in my first paragraph.

Would still welcome replies from anyone who can answer any of my four specific questions about the Thermal Upgrade Kit, exactly zero of which are answered by the QuickSpecs link (thaz why I asked 'em here. :)
