Have you followed the installation instructions for Vmware & Windows NT?

Did you set the Virtual machine to have a guest operating system of Windows NT?

Otherwise I suggest you consult the Vmware support documents. Vmware uses it's own SCSI devices so is not dependent on the physical hardware you are using. You will also need to install the Vmware tools once it's installed.

VMware Server virtualizes your storage as one of three devices:
1) IDE Controller - (limited to 4 devices)
2) LSI Logic U320 SCSI Controller (symmpi.sys)
3) BusLogic PCI SCSI Controller (VMSCSI)

When you were creating the virtual machine, as Chris stated you'll need to select Windows NT 4.0 Server. Later you may be prompted for the type of MSD (Mass Storage Device) you want to install. You'll want to select the BusLogic/VMSCSI option--not LSI Logic U320. The BusLogic driver is already included in the Windows NT 4.0 Server installation files, and it will not require you to press F6 to add another MSD driver.

After installing the OS, install the VMware Tools to update the drivers and gain some ease of use.
