dl360 g5 doesn't support quad core

I have a dl360 g5 that had a dual core xeon installed. I replaced with an HP xeon e5440 kit (457933-B21). When it posts, it says that the chipset doesn't support this processor type. I have other dl360 g5's running quad cores without issue. Anybody have an explanation?

Re: dl360 g5 doesn't support quad core

Depends upon the motherboard - some only support 5100/5300 series while others support 5400 series.

It could also be a firmware issue (ASUS DSVB updated theirs and could support 5100 thru 5400 series - well hope so as bought it with 2 5410s will tell you shortly:) ).

This is a problem as HP put in different motherboard types depending upon your initial order.

Do the motherboards in both 360s match, if so then you probably need to look at BIOS revisions and then firmware.

Re: dl360 g5 doesn't support quad core

Blake,
you should reinstall the dual core and flash the system(all the firmwares it finds, not only system bios as you probably have very old firmwares) with the latest firmware maintenance CD(8.40 at the time of this post)
THEN, replace the CPU.

for reference, what's your current bios lvl?

you can download the firmware maint CD(and convert it to a USB pen drive) from the support page for the DL360

Re: dl360 g5 doesn't support quad core

thanks for the replies. It has bios version P58 installed. At first, it wouldn't even post. Only after I flashed to p58 did it post, but halt with an unsupported processor error. Anyone have any ideas if i need a different main board, and if so, what that part # might be?

Re: dl360 g5 doesn't support quad core

Blake,
P58 is the family number for DL360G5 BIOS, not the version, the version is the date.

the latest version is: 2008.11.02 9 Dec 2008

here's the link if you have windows:
http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareDescription.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&prodTypeId=15351&prodSeriesId=1121486&prodNameId=3288144&swEnvOID=1005&swLang=8&mode=2&taskId=135&swItem=MTX-77e30ead687648929a6ec162d4

or if you want to use a USB pendrive:
http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareDescription.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&prodTypeId=15351&prodSeriesId=1121486&prodNameId=3288144&swEnvOID=1005&swLang=8&mode=2&taskId=135&swItem=MTX-5c9dd9a9a2ed4005aebd487504

Acording to the release notes, you must have a BIOS that's older than 22-August as that was the newest that added quad-core 5400 support.

I still recommend you download and burn the FW maintenance CD(you can also put it in a USB pendrive with the "hp usb key utility" if you don't have a OD in the server) as the latest bios versions require latest iLO FW as well and this will update everything:
http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareDescription.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&prodTypeId=15351&prodSeriesId=1121486&prodNameId=3288144&swEnvOID=1005&swLang=8&mode=2&taskId=135&swItem=MTX-bd09480e22594f2785bd3b6678

About the different MB, there are no other "models" for DL360 G5, each generation has a fixed MB model and type(so the first DL360G5 to come out it's the exact same as one you'd buy today), if it where any other it wouldn't be G5 anymore

hope it helps

Re: dl360 g5 doesn't support quad core

I just flashed the BIOS to 11/2/08 (it was 9/29/08), but it is doing the same thing. It posts, beeps a few long beeps and then says "The revision of the Intel (R) 5000 series chipset on the system board does not support the installed processor type. System Halted!

(The processor is an intel e5440 2.8 Ghz quad core hp part 457933-b21)
The funny thing is it lists the processor correctly as quad core 2.8 GHz w/6 MB cache before it halts the post.
The system board model is 399554-001. I haven't had a chance to compare to one of my dl360 g5 quad servers yet.

Re: dl360 g5 doesn't support quad core

at this point, your safest bet is to open a case with HP, because there's no other board type for the G5(unless they rolled one silently) and your processor kit is the correct one for the server model and generation.

Seeing as it's not firmware, contact support and have them send you a replacement board

Re: dl360 g5 doesn't support quad core

Yeah...
Support says that my dl360 g5 was a very early model that only supports 50xx and 51xx xeon models. I have to purchase a newer system board to run the e5440 xeon. Bummer

For anyone else who experiences this:
The 412199-001 system board will only support 50xx and 51xx dual core xeon cpus.
The 436066-001 system board will support up to 54xx quad core xeon cpus.

Is there any way you could send me a copy of the DL360 BIOS and firmware update files?
