ifNumber on ProLiant BL p-class C-GbE2 Interconnect Switch B

Don't understand why ifNumber returns 280 why I query this OID. The first ifIndex returns 257 and the last ifIndex returns 280 which indicates 24-port switch. Two questions: 1) why ifNumber returns 280? 2) why ifIndex starts at 257?
