netserver e800 + windows sbs 2003 premium

Hi!

2 Years ago we upgraded our Netserver E800 from Windows 2000 Server to Windows Small Business Server 2003. We haven't experienced any kinds of problems until a few months ago. Since then we get read and sometimes write errors from time to time with our HP SureStore DDS3 Tapedrive (c1537a) and ntbackup.
After analysing this problem for a while we came to the conclusion that it would be best to upgrade this scsi tapedrive to an external HP DAT-72 USB 2.0 Tapedrive to overcome possible SCSI compatibility issues with Netserver and Windows Server 2003.

So is there someone out there who has sucessfully set up such a configuration (usb 2.0 pci controller + hp dat72e usb 2.0 + netserver e800 + windows sbs 2003) and can recommend supported usb controller cards and firmware/driver versions for this kind of configuration?

Many thanks in advance and best regards,

Mathias Hess

Hi Mathias,

Unfortunately, there are no supported USB controllers for this server. If you can find one that works, that's great but HP never designed USB compatibility into their Netservers. You'll find that even the Netservers with USB ports on them don't work becase the BIOS was never written to support it and HP is not writing any new updates.

Sorry I couldn't be more help,

Thanks for your response, Sean!

So, maybe someone could suggest us another type of externel connection (we need this to easily verify the correctness of our backups on another machine) to bypass the probable scsi incompatibility issues.

Perhaps some firmeware or driver upgrades could solve the scsi problem too. Has anybody experienced the same kind of problems with netserver and windows sbs 2003 and can suggest some firmware or driver version?

Mathias,

The best way would be to use a SCSI controller to the DAT drive. This server is designed for SCSI drives not USB.

You could also connect a new SCSI DAT drive to the internal SCSI port.

Hope this helps.
