RMC-V: Restore Single Virtual Machine from Express Protect Backup

I┬┤ve installed and configured a RMC-V 4.0 connected to a StoreVirtual Cluster and a StoreOnce VSA and done some Express Protects Backup┬┤s. Now I want to restore one of those, but dont want to overwrite the parent volume. I┬┤ve searched here for a solution and found this thread

https://community.hpe.com/t5/3PAR-StoreServ-Storage/RMC-V-restore/m-p/6935120

I┬┤ve attached the Express Protect to a Windows host via the RMC webGUI. The  Snapshot was found and listed at the disk management. I brought it online, but could not access the files. Do I need special drivers or a tool to access the files of the snapshot?

Regards

Re: RMC-V: Restore Single Virtual Machine from Express Protect Backup

Hello @P_Austermann,

First a more general comment:

The Element Recovery Technology (ERT) of RMC-V does allow to restore individual objects that are part of a VM-datastore. It does not allow to restore individual files that are stored inside the filesystem of the VM.

To answer your question:

If you want to read/browse/restore individual files that are part of the filesystem that belongs to a VM, then you have the following options:

1. Start the VM that you recovered and access the files via the Guest-OS.

2. create a VM with the same OS that you have restored and add the ".vmdk" file to it.

3. Use a tool to mount the .vmdk file directly

I searched the internet and found "VDDK" (free download) to do the mount.

Note that your host must have a filesystem driver of the format of the virtual disk.

If you have problems with that you should reach out to the VMware support.

Let me know if you have any further questions.

Re: RMC-V: Restore Single Virtual Machine from Express Protect Backup

Hello @Bertram Stoeckler

I didnt intend to restore individual files which are stored on the VM.

My intention was to restore a single VM from a Datastore Snapshot.
