how to make work the integrated modem laptop

i need to know if i can make work, the integrated modem of a HP presario X1000 with any Linux distribution, at this time i only have probed Debian Knoppix live CD, but i coudn't make work the integrated modem (the OS does not recognize it), if anyone knows how to do that, please be my guest!

The best hardware support I've seen thus far is from Ubuntu.

Those modems are winmodems and are specifically designed NOT to work with Linux. Its very hard to get them going.

A far less frustrating solution to the winmodem issue is to go out and buy a $20 PCMCIA hardware modem.
