Possible characters for password

Hi,

how can I know what characters I can use in a password (on Tru64 v5.1b).
The man says can you can use a-z in both lower and uppercase, numbers and specials chars.
Is there a way to know the complete char set available for passwords?
I need to establish a decent password policy and I would like to theoretically point out the advantage of using numbers, uppercase chars and special chars (#!*;)" in passwords.

With kind regards,

Kris

Re: Possible characters for password

Indeed, but how many special chars are there?

I need this to calculate the number of possible passwds and see how many days a bruto force passwd cracker would take to hack a password.
With this info I could build a passwd policy and determine a safe password lifetime, minimum password lenght and characters to be used in a password (albeit in theory)

Re: Possible characters for password

You might want to consider enabling Enhanced Security. It allows longer passwords and many more options, like generating random passwords for the users.
See the Security Administration guide Appendix A and Appendix E.

Re: Possible characters for password

Hi,

usually the first 8 characters of a password count(don't know about enhanced security).
a-z=26
0-9=10
!"§$%&/()=10

46^8=?

This is a lot and you should prevent a hacker even comimg close to the host and there is enhanced security a good thing.

Re: Possible characters for password

Enhanced Security allows up to 64 character passwords, depending on the encryption method selected.
