password length

Hi all,
i have created a local account template,in which is specify the password min length to be 6 characters and the password max length to be 15 characters, but when i try to change the password of an account the system request that the password must be between 6-8 characters. what is the problem with the upper limit.

Re: password length

How did you create the 'user' whose password is being modified?. Using default template or the new template?

Re: password length

Hi,

have you activated enhanced security?
If I am not mistaken that is necessary for password beyond 8 characters.

greetings,

Re: password length

Look at "man prpasswd" there are different length fields for passwords selected by different methods (i.e. system generated passwords vs user chooses own password). Perhaps you've set the wrong one.

Re: password length

Do you get the same error when you try changing the passwd thru 'passwd' command as well?

Re: password length

the error message that restrict the password between 6-8 chars appears in any method you use to change the password.

Re: password length

Hi,

Could you show us the edauth output for both the user and the template in question? E.g.:
#edauth -g
#edauth -g

Solution

Re: password length

Hi ziad,

The problem is that you're using a crypt value of 2 for that user (u_oldcrypt#2). The value of 2 indicates that you want to use crypt for encrypting the user's password (the same encryption method used if you're not running Enhanced Security). The maximum password length for crypt is 8. If you want a longer password length, you'll have to use a different encryption method.
