ssh slow

I have a system running Tru64 5.1.

I downloaded the subsets SSHBASE323 SSHDOC323 and did run /sbin/init.d/sshd start to start the Secure Shell server daemon.

When ever i try to do an ssh to this system the response is very slow.

After i give the username for the password: to come up it take about 40-60 sec.
Then again for the login to come up it take another 60-180 sec.

I did the same exercise of installing the subsets on one more system but the result is the same.

On both these servers the telnet works fine without any response problem.
So it rules out a problem with resources.

I have also looked up for patches for ssh but found none on the HP site.

Please help.

Re: ssh slow

Hi Deepak,

I'm assuming it's a cluster. If it is then..

this could be causing the problem...

2.9.1 Cluster Alias Does Not Appear to Evenly Distribute SSH Requests
Incoming connection requests addressed to a cluster alias are distributed among members of that alias according to the selection weight (selw) assigned each member of the alias. The default cluster alias has a selw of 3. However, because the Secure Shell (SSH) uses two connections to establish a single connection, connection requests to the default cluster alias that use SSH will be distributed such that some systems get two connections while some systems get one connection. There is no real distribution imbalance; connection requests are still distributed according to the selection weight assigned to cluster members.

Hope this helps...

Orrin.

Thanks a ton for the reply.

Please note that this is not a clustered sytem.

Re: ssh slow

Hi,

Why don't you start up the ssh daemon with debug option (-D option) and collect as much as debug information while the login process is in progress. Also check your DNS response time if you are in a DNS environment. May be just change the host search order for a moment to verify that DNS is not the culprit here.

Running ssh -vvv while connecting also may give you a clue as what migh be causing the slowness.

Re: ssh slow

It give the following details

debug1: Remote protocol version 2.0, remote software version 3.2.0 SSH Secure Sh
ell Tru64 UNIX
debug1: no match: 3.2.0 SSH Secure Shell Tru64 UNIX
debug1: Enabling compatibility mode for protocol 2.0
debug1: Local version string SSH-2.0-OpenSSH_3.7.1p2

So do i have to upgrade the version on my other systems ?.

Or is there a lower version available with Tru64 ?

Re: ssh slow

I don't think running different versions has anything to do with your performance issues. It *most* probably is a configuration issue.

I have here openSSH3.4.0 on Linux logging on to SSH2.0 on Tru64 perfectly fine.
