Is it possible to boot to an ISO from Remote Insight Lights Out Edition II

We have a Proliant ML570 server in a data centre which we have no physical access to unless we arrange for an escorted access. The ML570 has a Remote Insight Lights Out Edition II board in it. I have been asked to find out if it is possible to use this card to boot a Smartstart ISO image that exists on another server in a UNC share. Once we get this booted we can then point the smartstart at another ISO that we have VMware ESX on. We can get onto the RIB card currently from our office and restart the server etc. The firmware on the card is v1.21
Does anyone have any knowledge on if this is possible?

It is most definitely possible to boot servers using ISOs through the iLO, however you have to be using the activeX control rather than the Java console.

Just be aware that the ActiveX Control has issues with IE8, so IE7 or below is the way to go here.

When remote consoling, hover near the top of the remote screen and a drop down like the remote desktop title comes down. From here you can mount an Image/DVD/Floppy etc. Reboot server from the power options on the same drop down menu and away you go.

However I am not too sure if you can use an Image over network link - you may have to have the image local to the machine to mount it in iLO

hope this helps.

Hello David,
Yes you can !
This feature is called Virtual Media. With this you can sit in US & update servers in Tokyo if you may. ;-)

Re: Is it possible to boot to an ISO from Remote Insight Lights Out Edition II

So everyone is talking about talking about iLO. I think David's question is about the RILOE II card.

I have not worked with one of those boards in several years. I don't think it will boot an ISO image.

That said, you should be able to use the CPQIMAGE tool to creat a virtual floppy image of the ESX bootdisk.img file. Mount the virtual floppy and start the ESX install, pointing it to an FTP or HTTP source were it can get to the ESX bits.

Like I said, it's been years since I worked with on of those boards, but I'm still not sure it will work with an ISO image.

If you look at the picture on page 55 of the document you referenced, under the CD-ROM section you can select the drive letter of the local CD-ROM drive on the machine your using to access RILOE. The image file button is located under virtual floppy.

Re: Is it possible to boot to an ISO from Remote Insight Lights Out Edition II

Thanks to everyone for their input so far. I have not been able to get it to pick up the ISO image at boot time. We do have other newer Proliant servers and I have been able to use the ILO on those servers to access an ISO. I am guessing it is not to be with the RIB II card. Annoying as this server is in a third party data centre which is a nightmare getting in to. I will try the suggestion though about creating the ESX image for the boot floppy and see what we get.
