Adding Dell PowerEdge servers running Linux to Insight Manager 5.2

Hi,

I've been trying to add a few PowerEdge 1850s running Linux to SIM.

I've added the MIBs from the OpenManage media (compiled/registered without issue)to the MIB directory on the SIM server.

I discover the server by IP manually, and it resolves the DNS name without issue. It picks up the Linux OS, as well.

It does not pick up the hardware platform, and I'm wondering why.

Any suggestions?

It looks like you have a configuration issue. Have you checked your etc/snmp/snmpd.conf ?

Have you defined trapsink, community strings ?

Have you configured wbem credentials for your dell server on the HP SIM server?

the minimum it should state wiould be dell server...I am not so sure it give more details...

The other part you have to change is the System Type in SIM. In the document that Fred Links out to, follow the steps in section five, "System Type Manager." This will discover your Dells as PowerEdge systems.

I don't know if you use or have the DRACs configured, but the only way that I could get these in correctly was to use the mxnode command with an input XML file. I've attached one as an example. Hope this gets you what you need.

In order for HP SIM to collect data on the PowerEdge beyond the most basic SNMP data, you would need to load a WBEM CIMOM and some kind of provider, which Dell doesn't provide.

I'm not very savvy when it comes to Linux, unfortunately...I've been looking at the snmpd.conf this AM.

The only entry I see in the UI where it looks like I would configure the community string is the following:

# SECTION: Access Control Setup

# This section defines who is allowed to talk to your running
# snmp agent.

# rocommunity: a SNMPv1/SNMPv2c read-only access community name
# arguments: community [default|hostname|network/bits] [oid]

#rocommunity public default system (original value)

There are no settings specified, as of yet.

What would the syntax be for a R/C or R/W community and what does the default system refer to (localhost?) or the SIM server?

I'm guessing...

rccommunity "string" IP.Ip.IP.IP

As far as configuring WBEM, would it be over port 2381 and than the admin credentials for the Linux box?

This is how the snmpd.conf looks like:

Thanks for your help.

I'm now receiving traps successfully, but from the OS only.

WBEM and SNMP are configured properly, I believe.

I receive alerts via SNMP about LINUX when the OS powers on, services stop, etc. I receive alerts for up/down from ICMP.

I pulled a power supply while the server was powered up, no traps were sent.

I downloaded the latest OMSA and copied/compiled the MIBs on the SIM box (10892.mib and dcstorag.mib).

WBEM is set to use the Global Defaults.

I may contact HP to see if they have any advice as where to go from here.

If the power supply event shows in system log OR /var/log/messages
run a Network Trace [wireshark or microsoft network monitor] and check if the trap reaches SIM server or not
If it doesn't, find where in the network is is discarded/lost

If I'm receiving emails for OS events, such as Linux services stopping or seeing changes such as the "contact" flag in the SNMPD file config reflected in SIM, than I believe that SNMP communication is in place...correct?

I think it may be the Dell (OMSA) agent software and what is actually installed on these servers...not 100 percent.
