Can not open SMH remotly

when we log on to a server we can open the hompage with out a problem

but if we try to open it remotly we can not get to it

any ideas

A software firewall on the system is the most likely cause.

although i have just found i can not telnet to 2381

Double check the settings on the SMH. Sometimes (although not set or checked) the SMH will bind only to the loopback address, 127.0.0.1, and not listen on any other interfaces. The only way I've found to resolve this is to manually bind it to the loopback address, restart the service, remove the binding you just added and restart one more time. After this you should be fine.
The other issue I've had is with the SMH bundled with the 8.00 version of HP's ProLiant Support Pack. In this case, upgrading to 8.10 resolved it.

i have just updated to version 8.0 today and i can now see the link but still not able to connect.

will try and update to version 8.1

Also, recheck that the firewall service is disabled - not just stopped.
If it isn't, try disabling and rebooting. We've had a few "interesting" things happen where the firewall looks as though it's stopped but where it still prevents access.

Https://hostname(fqdn):2381

Just check if you are using Https instead of Http.
